Weekly Bible Study - Study 9 - The Book of Hebrews Ch 3:1-6

Therefore holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honour than Moses just as the builder of the house has greater honour than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.” (Hebrew Chapter 3: verses 1 to 6 New International Version)

It’s not what you do but who you know!

Though many do not realise it, most people in Australia associate their faith in God with Moses. By this I mean, since Moses was the giver of the 10 commandments, many associate their faith with how good they are or to what extent they have done the right thing followed the laws Moses gave us from God. For example; do not steal, lie, etc. The purpose of this point is not to ignore the importance of being good or doing these right things, but to demonstrate there is something more important than this with God.
Consider this analogy for a moment. You would like to play a game of golf at Augusta National where the US Masters just finished is played each year. You approach them and say I have done all the right things in life, followed the 10 commandments of Moses, I am a good guy, so I would like a game of golf there please. You will most likely be rejected. No matter how good you are and the golf club may think being a good guy is important too; you will fail.

However, if you know in person an official of the club and they wanted to invite you to a game of golf there, your chances will have dramatically improved. At Augusta, it’s all about getting an invitation. It’s not a matter of how good a guy you are, but it’s about who runs the club.

The same principal applies with God. It’s not a matter of how good you are because based on that principal you will have failed. Moses was faithful as a servant of God in giving the law to his people and the world. Its value is in showing us the way God wants us to live.

However Jesus came as a son, who through his death, resurrection and ascension has secured a new life and inheritance for us, one that is eternal. We are talking about an inheritance here we have no right to, because of our sins. To receive this new inheritance it is about who you know, that is Jesus who secured this. We are invited by Jesus receive this inheritance by getting to trust, follow and commit our life to Jesus. It is primarily about who we value in life. God has set up a kingdom that will last forever, its leader is Jesus and this is why in our writers argument, Jesus is superior to Moses. Jesus is superior in at least 2 ways; one is a servant and the other a son. The second is Moses delivered the law to us and died like the rest of us while Jesus secured our salvation and lives forever. There is a big difference between the two and getting to know Jesus makes the difference.

The encouragement in all of this is to get to know Jesus, read of his life in the New Testament, learn to trust and follow him with all our hearts and be part of his community, the church. To do this is to invited to be part of something far greater than we can realise, even playing at Augusta national.

Prayer. Lord God, help us to see the greater value in following Jesus and lifting his name on high than trying to be good and exalting ourselves. Amen.
