PGA Chaplain Bible StudiesWeekly Bible Study - Study 6 - The Book of Hebrews Ch 2:5-9“It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified: “what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honour and put everything under his feet”. In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. But we see Jesus who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrew Chapter 2: verses 5 to 9 New International Version) From the top to the bottom! For any of us who have played golf you know the frustration of going from the top to the bottom very quickly. Just when you think you have a winning formula you lose it and hope the good times of good scoring will return one day. You see the same frustration in every area of life and discovery; just as progress is made another new challenge emerges. The problem for us is that we never seem to win battle at least at golf or with our own disappointments in life. Nor are we able to avoid or overcome death, our greatest enemy. For God, our sins are the problem and Jesus has a solution. Jesus enters the scene. Prior to this moment our writer has been convincing us that Jesus has always existed and is greater than the angels as the eternal son of God. With Jesus we also believe for a short time he has humbled himself to a lower state than the angels when he embraced our human frailty and became a man. Even though we were created to rule over the world; we have been unable to fully put this in practise. Jesus came to fulfil our destiny to rule through his own suffering and death and giving humanity a new start. The purpose of Jesus’ coming was to share in our suffering and death and pave the way for a new start. Because Jesus himself did not need to die because he never sinned, he died in our place. This is the undeserved kindness of God, whereby Jesus takes our sins and we receive his righteousness. Yet death was unable to hold Jesus and he rose from the dead and now has been exalted and crowned with glory. We can say that Jesus started at the top, lowered himself for a short time for us and now has been raise to the top again forever. The purpose of this was to lift us from the bottom where sin and death rules and give us an inheritance with him in glory. So God gives each of us a choice about whom we identify with, our own efforts or the merits of Jesus that was earlier in the chapter called the good news of our salvation. Prayer. Mighty God, thank you for Jesus who lowered himself and shared our humanity in order to set us free from our sins and lift us out of the grave. Amen. |
