PGA Chaplain Bible StudiesWeekly Bible Study - Study 4 - The Book of Hebrews Ch 1:10-13“He also says, “In the beginning O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain, they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for my feet?” (New International Version) Climate Change could destroy the earth, but Jesus will remain. There is something that the scientists and the bible agree on, and that is the created world has a used by date attached to it. I’ve read that scientists believe that the earth will eventually overheat and explode and here in our reading this week, is the admission that the earth will perish and wear out. If you have ever spoken to a Jehovah witness, their testimony is that the world is eternal and will return one day to a paradise like the Garden of Eden in Genesis Chapter 2. The most common view however in the church is the hope of a new earth and heavens created by God. However we may view the future of the earth, the clear intention of the author is to contrast the pain and the decay of the existing world with the eternal nature of Jesus who remains the same forever and has established a new life that is eternal. There has been such an emphasis on climate change and caring for the earth in recent years and I must admit I am a supporter of sustaining the world and looking after it as much as possible. We were created by God to till and care for the Land and without its support life is not possible for us. Like most things there is a balance to be sought without becoming an extremist one way or the other. In a similar way we are doing so much to try to preserve life that our aged care centres are filling up. It doesn’t seem to be true that “only the good die young” because we do all we can to preserve our life. Remember those early days after you received the light when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. Sometimes you were exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. You sympathised with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.” The point is that even today many followers of Jesus across the world suffer the same fate and we can have a part in encouraging them by sending money, bibles and letters to encourage them. Through a church you can get involved with helping such brothers and sisters. Prayer. Mighty God, we give you thanks for Jesus who has won the victory over life and whose kingdom is eternal. Amen. |
