Reading – John Chapter 20:19-20.

“Peace Be With You”

“On the evening of the first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came among them and said, “Peace be with you” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. John Chapter 20: verses 19 to 20. (New International Version).

How much joy is there when you win a golf event whether it is a local competition a tour event or a major? No doubt winning a major has more significance, but the joy of winning is something we all find satisfying. The winner of the Rugby League grand final this week and all its supporters will celebrate long and hard, most likely for a week. Let’s hope that it is Melbourne and not Manly.

When Bernhard Langer won the US Masters for the first time in 1985, he was also ranked the number one golfer in the world, he had a wife and family and all the money he needed for life, yet he was still unfulfilled.

A week later he attended the US Tour bible study and heard from Jesus the need to be born again from John Chapter 3. Since golf and success could not make him fulfilled in life, he found in Jesus the words of eternal life, friendship with God and his sins taken away by Jesus. He gave his life to Jesus and has never looked back.
The joy and knowledge he found from this experience was far greater than anything else he had experienced or known in his life. From this moment on, he had peace in his life.

In our reading this week, the disciples are locked away in a room in fear of the Jewish authorities’ who had just crucified Jesus and they felt vulnerable as well to arrest. For them their future was uncertain, since Jesus had gone.  They had heard reports of Jesus alive from some of the women and others during the day, but they did not really believe them.
But in this moment, Jesus appears to them all; shows them his hands and feet and says; “Peace be with you”. This peace he gave was more than just a calming of the fear they were experiencing; Jesus was speaking about peace with God and peace about life.

It’s a deep peace that touches our heart and soul knowing that Jesus has won the victory in life. Far greater than any sporting premiership or major title, Jesus has won the battle over death, sin and the evil in our world represented by the devil.
It’s a peace that enables us to know the favour and presence of God in our life. It’s a peace where we can call God our Father and know his love will never leave us. It’s a peace that passes all understanding and helps us in the fearful and confusing moments of our life.
It’s a peace that we have when we played poorly, knowing that golf is only a game, Jesus is real life, and tomorrow is another day.

This peace is for everyone when we embrace Jesus with all our heart and soul. There is joy in winning at golf and a premiership, it’s just that it cannot compare with the joty there is in knowing and enbracing Jesus.

Prayer.
Thank you Lord Jesus for the peace you give us in life that calms all the storms that we face. Amen
