Reading – John Chapter Ch18: verses 1 to 11.
“The Majors”
After Jesus had said this prayer, he left his disciples and went to a brook called Kidron. There was a garden in that place, and Jesus and his disciples went in.--- So Judas went to the garden, taking with him a group a Roman soldiers, and some of the Temple guards sent by the Chief Priests and the Pharisees; they were armed and carrying lanterns and torches. Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward and asked them, “Who is it you are looking for?” John Chapter 18: verses 1 and 3 to 4. (Good News Bible).
How exciting it is during the major golf season! The British Open is on this month and Australians have fared well in this event with Peter Thompson, Greg Norman and Ian Baker Finch some of our champions.
The great players often speak of preparing well for the major championships. These tournaments are the crowning event in the life of a professional golfer and for the avid golf watcher as well. Across the world we measure greatness in golf primarily in how many major championships a golfer has won.
The uniqueness of a major championship is players participating, from all around the world with the best players available and the pressure and atmosphere this creates.
In terms of Jesus’ life the major event of his life is his arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection. Each account of Jesus’ life in the bible; Matthew Mark, Luke and John gives considerable attention to his arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection. The reason for this is not a desire to focus on cruelty and suffering, but to highlight the main purpose of his life.
When Jesus was arrested; Peter in verse 10 draws a sword to fight, but Jesus says; “Do you not think that I will not drink the cup of suffering which my Father has given me”?
It is not uncommon for us to admire someone who has given their life for a worthy cause. Every culture has its heroes in this regard. For Jesus though there is a difference. Jesus’ death is for every person who has ever lived in every time and culture. Jesus died in our place for sins we have committed to bring us to God.
We believe Jesus’ death is unique in that through his death he gives eternal life to the world.
If you read the life of Jesus in the New Testament you can clearly see that Jesus giving his life for us is the MAJOR focus of his life. This in no way diminishes the other amazing parts of his life such as his compassion, teaching and miracles.
In every church you go too, if it is Christian, the cross and empty tomb will be the heart of its life and message. This is the major event that gives life to everything else. This is why the Lords Supper, or communion or mass is celebrated. It is why Easter is more important than Christmas in the Church. Jesus says that his suffering was given to him by his Father. This shows God at work to rescue us from sin and death.
Prayer
Thank you Lord God, that you your love for us is so amazing. Help us never to forget what you have accomplished for us. This indeed is your greatest work. Amen.
