Study 18 – May 19th to 25th 2008.
Reading – John Chapter Ch16: verses 8 to 16.

How Wrong can We Be?

Jesus said; “When the Spirit comes, he will prove to the people of this world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God’s judgment. They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me; they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more; and they are wrong about judgement, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.” John Chapter 16: verses 8 to 11. (Good News Bible)

Admitting you are wrong about something is very hard indeed for all of us. A golfer can have all kinds of problems with his swing, but would have it no other way. We like to defend our integrity and ourselves! But the truth is; sometimes we get things wrong.

Is it possible we are wrong about Jesus in our opinion of him? What do you think about Jesus? To ask this question today is to invite a wide range of responses. This is because today we more interested in our own personal opinions than asking the hard questions. Many people today have a kind of self-styled religion that suits their desires and needs.

Do we dare to investigate who Jesus is from the records of his life we have in the bible? There we find Jesus who is unique. The kind of Jesus revealed in the bible is much more challenging than the one I grew up with or I hear about from others. In short he is the only one who is indispensable to life.

Jesus gave authority to his followers to speak about him. Jesus spoke of his followers receiving the Holy Spirit to be with them as they speak of him in the world. The Holy Spirit who is God’s presence in the world will show-up, disclose, unmask the secrets of our hearts and show us what is wrong about ourselves and what is good about Jesus.

We could summarise the role and person of Jesus under the teaching we have considered throughout these studies. Here are a few:

  • The Light of The World.
  • The Word (who is God) who became a human being (Jesus)
  • The Bread of Life.
  • The Way the truth and the life.
  • The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
  • The Resurrection and the Life who never dies and is our judge.

The Holy Spirit’s role is to bring to the attention of the world through the preaching of Jesus that in regards to:

  • Sin – God treats this very seriously where we tend to laugh at it. Jesus gave his life for us, but unless we take sin seriously we are treating Jesus with contempt.
  • About what is Right – There are a lot of things in the world that are right and good; for eg – having a family, but this is God’s world and what is most important is that we get our relationship with God right. Jesus has come to help with this.
  • Judgment – judgment is an out of fashion idea when it comes to God, but again Jesus shows through his death and rising again that God judges and is just. We need to face up to the fact we are under the judgment of God because of our sin.

The plain message capable of being received by anyone of any age is to believe in Jesus whom God has sent. This requires humility and being open to seeing life God’s way.

Prayer. Our loving God and creator, help me today to hear your call to embrace Jesus who died for my sins, who shows me what is right and was judged in my place so I could be set free. Amen.
