PGA Chaplain Bible Studies
Study 12 - March 31st to April 6th 2008.
Reading – John Chapter Ch14: verses 25 to 31.
What kind of peace do you have?
“I have told you this while I am still with you. The helper,
the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you
everything and make you remember everything I have told you. Peace
is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do
not give it as the world does. Do not be worried or upset; do not be
afraid.” John
Chapter 14: verses 25 to 27. (Good News Bible)
I played some of my worse golf last Saturday in the club championships.
You come off the golf course feeling anything but peaceful. There are
a few like me that crack under the desire of wanting to play well; being
unable to handle it. Driving home I was grateful to realise that my life
does not depend on my performance on the sporting field.
Peace is also absent when I do the things I know are wrong or sometimes
going nowhere in city traffic. Also when I have problems in my family,
I feel churned up inside.
Jesus promises us a peace, unlike anything that is possible in this
world.
But what kind of peace is it that Jesus talks about that the world cannot
have?
This peace relates to what Jesus accomplishes in his life, on the cross,
his rising from the dead and exaltation to glory. Jesus has come to reconcile
the world to God. Jesus has accomplished this by wiping the slate clean
through his love for us in dying for our sins. In short he has removed
the stumbling blocks that stood between God and people.
This peace is about the relationship with God that Jesus makes possible.
This peace assures us our sins are forgiven. This peace assures us there
is a place in eternity for those who have embraced Jesus with all their
heart. This peace lets us know that whether we shoot a70, 80, 90 or 100
on the golf course, it has no effect on the love God has for us or in
receiving his peace.
It is very common for many people to have peace in life. They are content
with their efforts in their personal, home and business life. Others
find peace through meditation or adopting values or lifestyles that seek
to avoid the pressures of modern life in particular. Many are finding
ways to experience peace in a stressful world, but peace with God is
very different to this. Peace with God does not come from personal effort
or morality.
God is holy, just and perfect in all his ways. There are no shades of
grey with God, He is light and in him there is no darkness at all. The
peace God gives is a new life under the light God gives us through Jesus.
There are no compromises, no deals done here. We are good at compromises,
but Jesus never compromised anything in dying for us and offering us
peace with God. His peace is a gift to all who believe in Jesus and seek
to live in his light, obey and follow him.
This is the best kind of peace because it is with God and is eternal;
all other peace is short lived.
Prayer. Thank you Jesus for the gift of peace that you alone can give
that draws us into the wonderful presence of God and lasts forever. Amen. |
