PGA Chaplain Bible Studies
Study 9 - March 10th to March 16th 2008.
Reading – John Chapter Ch14: verses 6 to 11.
Meeting the Best!
“Jesus answered, I am the way the truth and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know
my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. Phillip
said, “Lord show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus
answered, “ Don’t you know me Philip, even after I have been
among you for such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, “Show us the Father?” Don’t you believe
that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words I say to
you are not my own. Rather it is the Father living in me who is doing
his work. John Chapter 14: verses 6 to 10. (New International Version)
Over the years I have been involved in golf chaplaincy on the Australian
Tour I have had a few opportunities to play with some well-known professionals
in a Pro-Am. Adam Scott, Craig Parry and Peter Senior are perhaps the
most well known. It is a privilege to play golf with them and like the
rest of the crowds to watch them in action in the Tournament. Being well
known in golf comes because of their performance on the golf course,
but in all other respects they are no different to the rest of us. It
is a shame that we exult sportspeople so much, because they let us down,
but such is the world we live in.
In our reading today Philip one of Jesus’ followers has come to
some understanding of Jesus and is impressed with his words, miracles
and actions. But Philip wants more; he wants to see the Father, who in
this reading is God as they understood God; as the only eternal Lord
and creator of the world and life. Philip wants to see the best! Philip
asks Jesus to show him what the Father is like!
To our surprise Jesus answers this request with the words “Whoever
has seen me has seen the Father. I am in the Father and the Father is
in me”.
Jesus has affirmed in this answer that it is impossible to separate
God who is known as the Father and Jesus himself as the Son. Another
way of saying this is that when we come to Christ, to believe in him
and walk in his ways we have come to God, believed in God and are walking
in God’s ways.
This is one area that you will find is a distinctive aspect of the Christian
faith. God is not distant; unable to be accessed or impersonal, but in
Jesus God has entered our history, our world and our experience. God
is personal. As such God is accessible to everyone who searches for God
through Jesus. In Jesus we need to look no further for God. Jesus shows
us what God the Father is like and as we shall see shortly in the reading
to follow; will show us how God continues to be with us through the Holy
Spirit.
I find many people talking about God in general conversations, but not
often about Jesus. One of the reasons for this is that people want to
keep God elusive, far enough away, so they can continue their life their
way. But the truth is God is not elusive, there is no mystery in the
sense of ignorance, but the fullness of God has come in Jesus. You need
look no further for God.
Prayer. Thank you Lord God for the amazing truth that you have
come to us in Jesus.
Amen. |
