PGA Chaplain Bible Studies
Study 31 – October 22nd to 28th 2007.
Reading – John Chapter Ch11: verses 1 to 6.
“Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village
of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay
sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet
with her hair. So the sisters sent word for Jesus, “Lord, the one
you love is sick.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This
sickness will not end in death. No it is for God’s glory so that
God’s Son may be glorified through it”. Jesus loved
Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when Jesus heard that Lazarus
was sick, he stayed where he was two more days” John Chapter 11:
verses 1 to 6. (New International Version)
Dealing With Disappointments
There are times in our lives when we have been let down or we have let
others down that disappoint us. I played in a master’s pennant
match this year and a couple of our better players were absent. As the
last two matches including mine were being played I knew that if I didn’t
win my match we could not win as a team. The match finished square and
I felt I let the team down at a time when we needed to win. I can only
imagine how hard it must have been for Bernhard Langer in 1992 when he
missed a 2 metre putt to lose the Ryder cup to America.
We all have experienced disappointment at golf, some more than others.
Professionals who play for a living and are struggling feel this more
than most.
The good thing about golf is that there is always another day, the day
when we feel it is our turn to win. But really, just to play the game
and contest is for most of us the joy of playing.
For those of us who believe in God there are many times throughout life
when we feel let down by God. Our prayers go unanswered, sickness or
injury hampers us, we get ourselves into holes we cannot get out of,
we never reach the ideals that we aspire to.
Mary and Martha were eagerly waiting for Jesus to come and help their
sick brother Lazarus, but he doesn’t turn up when they want. Jesus
heard that his good friend Lazarus was sick (and more than likely had
already died) but he delayed his journey for 2 days.
Why? We are not certain. But Jesus gives the assurance that everything
will be okay. This is something Jesus alone can say as one who has power
over life and death. Jesus in his plans will visit Mary and Martha, and
through this they will come to see the glory that belongs to Jesus.
It helps to try to see God’s timing in life; that is often different
to our own.
It is important to know that God is not one who is obliged to answer
our every request. God owes us nothing. God is not a puppet to be pulled
when we need God, but one to be respected and trusted.
.
We can know that God loves us, even when we are lost or waiting. Slowly
but surely life will bring rays of sunshine as we wait upon God.
In this life there will be many disappointments, even suffering, but
Jesus promises us that through his death and rising again, we can lift
ourselves above our cares and fears to know that nothing in life or death
can separate us from his love
Prayer
Lord God, help us to wait patiently when you seem slow in responding
to our help. Help us to see beyond our disappointments and to trust
you. Amen. |
