PGA Chaplain Bible Studies
Study 30: October 15th to 21st 2007.
Reading – John Chapter Ch10: verses 34-42.
“Jesus answered, “It is written in your law that God said, “You
are god’s”. We know that what the scripture says is true
for ever; and God called those people god’s, the people to whom
the message was given. As for me, the Father chose me and sent me into
the world. How then can you say that I blaspheme because I said that
I am the Son of God? Do not believe me then if I am not doing the things
my Father wants me to do. But if I do them, even though you do not believe
me, you should at least believe my deeds, in order that you may know
once and for all that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” John
Chapter 10: verses 34 to 38. (TEV)
Where Our Significance Comes From?
How do you verify that someone says they are who they say they are?
When it comes to golf our score speaks! We expect a professional player
to play to a certain standard as we do a beginner. At Tournaments you
see officials wearing their blazers and players with their badges showing
that they belong.
How do you know when it comes to God that a person is truly a representative
of God? Jesus claims to be the Son of God and to be one with the Father
who is God. This is the issue at stake as we come to the end of a long
dialogue between Jesus and some of the Jewish leaders in chapter 10.
The uniqueness of Jesus lies in his claim to be the Son of God and to
do and say the things you expect from God. Can Jesus and God be one?
That’s a question each of us must decide for ourselves.
Jesus answers this by showing how even before he came, God had chosen
certain people to represent him and they we called “god’s” not
with a capital G, but a small one showing that they belonged to God as
his children. They were given a privileged place in God’s world
by being part of his plans and representing God in the world. The Jews
themselves considered they had this unique role. Now Jesus claims the
same role.
Jesus likewise seeks to convince the leaders here that his words and
actions have shown that he is one with God. At the end of the day some
find Jesus persuasive, others do not.
Some Jewish leaders did believe in Jesus while others did not, this causing
the division that led to his eventual arrest and crucifixion.
In this very unusual passage, Jesus refers to his people as like god’s.This
begs the question many ask; where do we come from; the hand of God or
an accident of nature?
This reading though shows us the value that God places on human life.
One of the most compelling reasons for believing in God is the high
view God places on humanity and also his people. We all are created in
God’s image and likeness and those who are called and follow God
are called children of God. Contrast this to those who do not believe
in God (atheists). The atheist says we are the product of our natural
environment, a chance happening in nature from the water and the end
product of a series of periods of evolution. That is the sum total of
our significance, with the world continuing to evolve to an eventual
extinction.
I believe we are more than that and this comes from our creation from
the hands of God.
How we answer this question of our origins and our significance will
reflect on how we view many issues to do with life. Believing Jesus is
one with God opens the door to seeing God at work in our world.
Prayer
Lord God, Thank you that you have not left us in darkness, but have shown
us in Jesus the meaning and value of life. Amen. |
