Readings
from the Gospel of John
“The
next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he
said to him, “Follow me”. Phillip, like Andrew and Peter
was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathaniel and told
him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and
about whom also the prophets also wrote – Jesus of Nazareth,
the son of Joseph.”(John Chapter 1 verses 43to 45 (New International
Version).
When
it comes to coaching golf, nothing is like having experience and
knowledge on your side. I have listened to and watched some of Australia’s
finest golf coaches and what amazes me is how they draw on the words
and teachings of other great coaches. They have their own unique
style and methods, and when you add the lessons they have learnt
from others and you have a successful formula.
When we operate on our own whether it’s in golf, coaching,
life or following God, we have less to offer.
When Jesus came to the world he didn’t just appear on his
own or set his own agenda in terms of what he said and did. Jesus
came in fulfilment of the words of the first part of the bible called
the Old Testament. When John writes about Philip who saw in Jesus
the one Moses wrote about, he is saying that Jesus came as part
of their history and hopes. Let me give you 3 examples of how Jesus
is referred to prior to his coming:
1. Moses wrote about one who would come to speak the word of God
to the people. They called this person a prophet. You will find
this in Deuteronomy Chapter 18: verses 14-20 of the Old Testament.
This is what Jesus did; speak God’s word..
2.
With the prophets we have many ideas and references to choose from.
One example is in 2 Samuel Ch 7 verses 5 to 16 where God promises
through David that one of his sons will always be a ruler over the
people of God and this agreement will last forever. This promise
is fulfilled in Jesus who is called the Son of David in Matthew
Chapter 1 verse 1. Jesus came to bring God’s rule and way
of life to us.
3.
The Prophet Isaiah God speaks about one who will suffer and die
for the sins of the people; that he will be treated harshly and
be despised. See Isaiah Chapter 52: verses 13 to Chapter 53: verse
12. Jesus suffers and dies as Isaiah speaks.
Jesus is no flash in the pan that appears on his own, but is one
who comes with all the promises and history of God behind him. He
drew great strength from knowing all that was spoken of him prior
to his coming. So he was able to speak meaningfully and fully to
the people about God and the meaning of his life.
We
do well in life when we can learn as much as we can from those who
have gone before us in whatever walk of life we live in. It is interesting
and true that the more we listen and learn from others the wiser
we become as teachers.
What makes Jesus unique is that as Jesus was the one spoken of from
the past, he is also the one that will judge us in the future concerning
our life.
We will do well to listen to the word of God when Jesus was transformed
before Moses and Elijah to a radiant heavenly figure in Mark Chapter
9: verses 2 and 3. God says, “This is my Son, whom I love.
Listen to him.”
Prayer.
Lord God, we thank you that Jesus is no flash in the pan, but one
who fulfils your promises and history and gives life and order for
our lives. Amen.
