Readings
from the Gospel of John
“The
next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look,
the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. This is the
one I meant when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed
me, because he was before me. I myself did not know him, but the
reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed
to Israel.”(John Chapter 1 verses 29to 34 (New International
Version).
There
is a game of golf I love playing but not every one does. It is called
ambrose. It is a team game and as a team you play and count the
best shot of each person in the team. There is only one score on
each hole for the team. It is not uncommon to shoot a score well
under par and feel you have conquered the game. The other lesser
shots you can discard and they don’t count. Being able to
count other people’s good shots as you own makes the game
a lot of fun.
There
are many examples in life when a similar idea can apply. For example,
I can choose to pay a bill for a friend that means they are set
free from the debt. I can rescue a child in danger and save their
life by my actions.
In
the same way Jesus came to help us with something that we are hopeless
to rescue ourselves from; and that is sin. I have to laugh at the
odd person who insists that they are innocent in life. But it grieves
me that they trust in their own integrity on the day God will judge
the living and the dead.
John
in his message of life concerning Jesus testifies that he is the
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. A Lamb was offered
as a sacrifice according to the Old Testament Law for the weakness
and sins of the people. This history of sacrifice prepares us for
the perfect and once and for all sacrifice that Jesus made in dying
for our sins. His death was for us and we can benefit from this
by turning away from our sins, believing in Jesus and receiving
this for ourselves. It is a gift that God offers freely because
of the depth of his love for us.
As the most well know verse in the bible states:
“For God so loved the world so much that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have
eternal life.” (John Chapter 3 verse 16 NIV).
As
we turn from our sins and receive Jesus and all he means, Jesus
takes away our sin, forgives and restores us to a favourable relationship
with God.
When I eventually die and stand before God, though I have loved
God for 31 years, the one thing I will cling to is that my trust
is in Jesus and his life.
In
ambrose you take the best shot every time. In life with God, Jesus
is the one we look to lead us into eternal life. As verse 47 of
John Chapter one states, there is nothing false in Jesus, he will
not let you down.
As
Christians we live a joyful, faithful and full life knowing our
sins are forgiven through Jesus.
Prayer.
Creator God, our pride often prevents us from reaching out to help.
We like to think we can make it on our own. We are amazed at Jesus
can take away our sins. Thank you. Amen.
