Readings from the Gospel of John

“The Law was given by Moses, but Jesus Christ brought undeserved kindness and truth. No one has ever seen God. The only Son, who is truly God and is closest to the Father, has shown us what God is like.” John Chapter 1 verses 17 and 18 (Contemporary English Version).

There is a great debate in the golfing world about whether Tiger Woods will beat Jack Nicklas’ record of 18 major championships. He is well on the way with his recent win at the British Open. Time will tell, but these two players have set themselves apart as legends of the game no one will ever forget.

Up until Jesus came, the Law of Moses was the one way of life that was recognized as a way of life to live in an way to please God. The law was given by God through Moses to help us to

  • Love and follow God more than anything else in life. (first 4 commandments)
  • Honor our parents who gave us life and who have nurtured us. (5th commandment).
  • Love and respecting each other by being faithful in marriage, not coveting other’s possessions, not stealing, lying or taking another’s life. (commands 6 to 10).

The problem with the law is in our ability to keep it. We have all disobeyed one or another of these commands. The Law of Moses while perfectly good; exposes our weakness and leaves us guilty before God. God expects us to obey his laws. The law is unable to give us life, even though it points us to how we should live. So many religious systems and beliefs continue to follow Laws as a way to life with no certainty to being acceptable to God.

Jesus has come to show us a better way to life, a way of truth and undeserved kindness. By truth, Jesus shows us he has perfectly obeyed the law in his life and by dying on the cross for our weakness and punishment. In this way Jesus has honored the law and satisfied God’s righteous ways. This is the truth. Jesus has fulfilled the law perfectly. Jesus has not bypassed the law; he has honored it in his life.

With undeserved kindness, we have been set free from the penalty of the law and given new life through Jesus. This kindness is for everyone, even the one who has most violently broken the laws of God.
Jesus has come with a message of life far superior to the law. The law while good; has brought judgment to us. Jesus brings forgiveness and life. What Jesus offers is within the reach of every person. Jesus comes and offers his life as a gift to be received; not to be earned.
I am not sure yet that Tiger will beat Jack Nicklas’ record, but I am sure that Jesus offers us a far superior way to life than the law.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that you give us kindness and truth in a way that is available to all. Help me today to walk in your ways, while honoring the laws you gave us to love you more than anything else and to love our neighbor in the same way we love ourselves. Amen.
