Readings
from the Gospel of John
“John
spoke about Jesus and shouted, this is the one I told you would
come. He is greater than I because he was alive before I was born.
Because of all that the Son is, we have been given one blessing
after another.” John Chapter 1 verses 15 and 16 (Contemporary
English Version).
A group
of six of us are preparing to go to Japan to share in the golf outreach
ministry of Pastor Michi Kawata. Only 9 weeks away now, the excitement
and expectation grows. Whenever we look forward to something great
or exciting, this fills us with a lease of life.
John’s
ministry from our reading was about preparing the people for Jesus’
coming. His preaching of Jesus’ coming has now given way to
the announcement of his arrival.
John
does this with true humility. He recognizes the prior existence
of Jesus to his own life. John’s life began at his birth recorded
in Luke’s Gospel Chapter 1, roughly 33 years ago. Jesus on
the other hand John says, has always existed because he has always
been the Word and God.
To
recognize our rightful place with God is the beginning of finding
new life that Jesus brings. We exist only through the gift of life
that God gives; Jesus exists because he is God and the author of
life. He is life.
It
is a great thing in sport when a winner accepts his prize with humility.
We have a winner in Jesus who comes humbly among us. It is also
a great thing in sport when the runner-up acknowledges the winner
and congratulates him. John wants to champion Jesus for who he is.
When we acknowledge the greatness of Jesus who comes for us, then
God can open our eyes to even greater things.
John
says that because of all that Jesus is, we receive one blessing
after another. What are these blessings Jesus gives?
The rest of the book of John will tell us in more detail, so we
will just give a summary here.
Some of the blessings of Jesus are:
• The gift of life.
• Able to become children of God.
• Light to guide us.
• The forgiveness of God.
• The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
• The giver of the Holy Spirit.
• The Good Shepherd who lays down his life.
• The truth about God.
What makes Jesus unique is his ability to deliver on his promises
and blessings. There are many false prophets, but none deliver what
Jesus can. Trust your life to him today.
Prayer
God, we thank you for the excitement that comes from our hopes and
expectations in life. We believe that Jesus can meet all our hopes
for life. Help us to be humble in acknowledging your greatness.
Keep us humble that we will receive all the wonderful gifts you
have for us. Amen.
