Readings
from the Gospel of John
Bible
Reading
“The Word became a human being and lived here with us.
We saw his true glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father.
From him all the kindness and all the truth of God has come down
to us” (John Chapter 1 verse14 Contemporary English Version).
People
who play golf are often heard calling out for some divine intervention
or help as they watch their ball head out of bounds or towards the
water. Occasionally a miracle happens, the ball skims over the water
or hits a tree and comes back into the field of play. God is not
in the habit of interfering with our skills or lack of them, the
hard work, the training and practice needed to succeed at any endeavor
in life. God made us to develop and learn our skills. One way we
learn is by our mistakes.
However
there is one reality that we have no control over and that is our
weakness for the dark side of life and the reality that we age and
die. The good news is that God has intervened to help us with these
two problems.
The amazing truth and strength of the Christian faith is in the
coming together of God and humanity in the person of Jesus. Jesus
is the Word who is God who became a human being like us.
Jesus
shows us kindness. This means what God does for us is undeserved.
It also shows how much God loves us. He loves us like any parent,
with an unconditional love. It is his kindness that will rescue
us from the darkness and death. Kindness is a quality in people
that we all admire.
Jesus
also shows us the truth. This is where it can hurt sometimes. His
truth exposes the lies we speak about ourselves. We usually want
others to like us, or we want to be successful, so we tend or deny
or bend the truth about ourselves. Avoiding the truth only makes
the problem worse. We can also put ourselves down so that the real
truth becomes blurred by our low self esteem.
I have
found that truth on the golf course is one of the hardest things
to learn. Taking a penalty when the ball moves slightly is one of
the hardest truths to call.
I recall
many years ago reading the life of Jesus for the first time just
how true it was. You can see it deals with real people, their lives
problems and dreams. No stone is left unturned, no secrets are hidden,
the truth is spoken with honesty yet with kindness. God deals with
the truth of life, while sometimes we try to avoid it.
There
is a real freedom in life that comes from receiving the kindness
and truth that Jesus brings. Jesus makes it possible for true reconciliation
with God, no matter what we have done.
Also this helps us in how we live. It’s important whether
we are playing golf, in relationships, doing business or anything;
that we live out kindness and truth in all our dealings. Try it;
it works.
Prayer
God, thank you that you know all about us, because through Jesus
you came to live with us. We are grateful for your kindness towards
us and for the truth about life that Jesus shows us.
In all our relationships, and in how we play golf, help us to be
truthful and kind in our words. Amen.
