Readings
from the Gospel of John
Bible
Reading.
“
The Word came into his own world, but his own nation did not welcome
him. Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So
he gave them the right to be the children of God. They were not
God’s children by nature or because of any human desires.
God himself was the one who made them his children.” John
Chapter 1:verses 11-13, (Contemporary English Version).
The
hit song by Joan Osborne has this message:
“What if God were one of us,
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on a bus
Trying to make his way home.”
This is a song that searches for God; that looks for God in the
everyday affairs of life.
Jesus lived this way when he was born and grew to a man and shared
his life with us. I so often hear people say that if God would only
reveal himself and to the world then they would believe. This is
often an excuse for unbelief, because faith also involves the renewing
of the human heart as well as evidence that God exists.
The
fact is that in the 1st century when Jesus came, some did not believe
that Jesus was God visiting the world, while some did. This is inspite
of his miracles, teaching and raising the dead.
God will only do so much. God’s looks for us to seek after
him, that we will do our part in the relationship.
A miracle
is possible. We can meet God, not as we meet people today in person,
but by receiving and believing in Jesus and all he stands for. When
we are prepared to do this, God will act, by creating a new life
within us, by his Spirit. There is nothing we can do to make this
happen. We cannot control God or make him our puppet. The opposite
is true. We need God, we can do nothing to keep our life; we all
have a “used by date” stamp that ensures we grow old
and die. As the years go on, the length of our drives off the tee
shortens, we find it harder to find our ball and we need a buggy
to get our way round the course.
By
receiving Jesus we can secure a new life, meet God and be called
his children. There is nothing better in life than to belong to
God and to be called his child.
We need to search our heart to see of we have an openness to receive
who Jesus is and the significance of his life, especially his death
and rising again.
In the game of golf there are many professionals and amateurs who
play the game, who have received Jesus; Bernhard Langer, Aaron Baddeley,
Payne Stewart to name a few among well-known stars. We all have
the same father, and in spite of our different golfing abilities
are equals in God’s family.
Prayer.
Our Father, we thank you that we can say you are our Father
because of Jesus. We are thankful that we have sisters and brothers
throughout the world. Help us if we have not believed and received
Jesus to take this step today. Amen.
