Study 16: 16th - 22nd October

Reading – John Chapter Ch 3:6 to 15.

“No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven- the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”(John Chapter 3 verses 13 to 15 (New International Version).

Golf professionals are trained to help us improve our game. When our games goes off the boil, or if has never gotten hot, we look to the Pro’s to help us. Everyone looks up to Tiger Woods who is by far and away the best golfer in the world at present. Likewise if we are sick, we look to a doctor for relief and healing. Some of the other people we look up to for inspiration and guidance in life are our parents, teachers, friends and ministers of churches. We look up to them because of their knowledge, experience and interest in helping us.

There is one and one only who can help us when it comes to life.
What makes the (Son of Man), another name for Jesus unique, is where he came from. Jesus came from heaven. Jesus lived prior to his birth in Bethlehem that we celebrate at Christmas. He came into the world through Mary, but came from above. His authority comes from who he is and where he comes from, from heaven above.

In the Old Testament, the time before Jesus in the book of Numbers Chapter 21 verses 4 to 9 we have an incident where the people of God complained against God and Moses their leader for leading them into the desert and failing to give them adequate food and water. God wanted to teach his people a lesson about life by reminding them of their need of him so he sent snakes into the camp that scared the people and killed some. The people came to their senses and pleaded to God for mercy. God responded by telling them to erect a bronze snake on a pole and that anyone bitten could look up to this pole and be healed. The people did this and learnt a valuable lesson about complaining.

Jesus uses this incident to speak about the meaning of his life. Jesus will be lifted up on a cross in a similar way to the snake. Everyone one who looks upon Jesus and believes in the purpose of his death will be given eternal life.

When it comes to our life, heaven is the only source of authority we can trust with our life. No amount of doctors, parents or teachers can help us overcome our dying. But Jesus can, because as we learnt earlier in John, Jesus created life in the beginning and has the power to give life or take it away.
There are some who say there is no life after death. There are others who say we return in different forms of re-incarnation. Both of these views offer little hope in overcoming the real suffering in our world.
Jesus by dying and rising from the dead gives us victory over sin and death and promises us an everlasting life that is pure and free from pain sickness and sin.
We all look up to certain people in life and this is a good thing that helps build our character, values and skills.
Who are you looking up to?

Prayer.
Loving and mighty God
We thank you for Jesus, the one who comes from heaven with the authority that God alone has. We look up to people to help us in this life when it comes to golf, growing up and learning about the world. Help us to see Jesus for who he really is, as the one we can look up to, to give us eternal life. Amen.
