Readings
from the Gospel of John
“The
next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Phillip, he
said to him, “Follow me.”(John Chapter 1 verse 43 (New
International Version).
Tiger
Woods is setting the golfing world on fire in recent weeks winning
the last five tournaments he has entered. This includes two of the
majors, the British Open and the US PGA. The only record Tiger is
after is to beat the number of major tournaments won (18) by the
great Jack Nicholas. Tiger has now won 12. Most golf commentators
are predicting he will do it in the next 3 to six years.
People who aspire to greatness and have the gifts and ability to
match their aspirations and are willing to work hard set standards
and achievements for others to follow. Every young golfer starting
out playing is trying to follow in the footsteps of Tiger Woods.
All
people look to follow someone in terms of life, achievements and
beliefs. The kinds of people we follow are our parents, teachers,
sporting heroes, movie stars, especially those we consider successful
at life.
I have
often been amazed how disappointed people can get is when people
they look up to let them down. Hansie Cronjie, the South African
cricketer comes to mind and others like Gary Ablett the AFL superstar
and in more recent time Mel Gibson the movie star.
At
the Australian PGA championship a couple of years ago, the crowd
and organizers were in shock as John Daley after finishing his golf
on Friday and missing the cut, threw his putter into the lake and
proceeded to walk straight back to his motel. Not the kind of behavior,
the PGA is encouraging.
The
constant media bombardment of Rugby League players in the news caught
drink driving, molesting others reminds all Rugby players of there
responsibility as role models.
When
Jesus said to Phillip to “follow me” he was expressing
authority and confidence in himself as God’s Son and being
worthy of one to follow.
While there are for all of us moments in our lives we are ashamed
of, this is not true of Jesus. We can follow Jesus, knowing he is
the way to life, the truth and is without fault. (See 2 Corinthians
Chapter 5: verse 21).
I have
chosen to give up following others or following my own ideas and
agenda. There is reluctance in Australia to talk about the merits
of Jesus. We prefer the merits of Tiger and other superstars. Tiger
has been called a freak he is so good. But at the end of the day,
Tiger will grow old and die for his sins like all of us.
There
is nothing to be ashamed of in following one who gives life
Prayer.
Heavenly father, we thank you we can follow Jesus, knowing we are
following one who will not let us down. Thank you how much he loves
all people, for his compassion and his willingness to die for us
to set us free from our sins.
We confess Jesus as our Lord, King and ruler, and seek to follow
him. Amen.
