Readings
from the Gospel of John
Bible
Reading
“In the beginning was the one who was called the Word.
The Word was with God and was truly God. From the very beginning
the Word was with God. And with this Word God created all things.
Nothing was made without the Word. Everything that was created received
its life from him, and he gave light to everyone. The lights keeps
shining in the dark and the darkness has not overcome it.”
(John Ch 1:1-5 Contemporary English Version).
I was
visiting the Garvin Institute of Medical Research in Sydney recently
and asked one of the scientists in their research into cancer and
human life, whether this swayed him towards a believing in God or
not. He said that his research into cells supported his belief in
evolution, but how life all began was beyond his understanding.
John
wrote his biography on the life of Jesus Christ and our bible studies
will take us through this great book. In our reading, John was convinced
that Jesus, who he spent 3 years with, was truly God and was responsible
for creating all of life. This includes our life. If this is true,
then we exist only because of Jesus and we depend on him for all
of life.
The
game of golf that we have developed and enjoy so much is part of
our life and therefore is also, a gift from God. We can enjoy all
good things God gives us with thankfulness. In golf we strive to
do our best, make friends, enjoy the great outdoors, play the competition
and learn patience. God has much to teach us about life on the golf
course, while we play.
Our
reading reminds though of a darkness that exists, that robs us of
life and God’s goodness. We all have had first hand experience
of the darkness in our lives, in others and the world.
The
good news is that Jesus is able to pierce through the darkness,
his power and love overcomes the darkness that tries to destroy
us. This is why when believers talk about Jesus, it’s mostly
about good news, not bad.
When
we trust our life to the one who gave us life, then we are in good
hands both in this life now and also beyond the grave. Jesus said
these words:
“I am the one who raise the dead to life. Everyone who has
faith in me will live, even if they die.” (John Chapter 11:verse
25 CEV).
I have
decided in life to trust my life to Jesus, because I believe there
is no one better to trust in life. Why not read John with me and
make up your own mind.
Prayer
Jesus, Lord God and Creator of all of life; thank you for who
you are and for all of life. Thank you for the great game of golf,
through which we develop our skills, learn about patience, meet
new friends and enjoy the amazing world you made. We rejoice you
are the light of the world. As Jesus conquered the darkness on the
cross, so we put our trust in him to lead us to light and life.
Amen.
